Hawt!  Gold skin by Shawn Soh

Whenever I head down to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City, I head down with an open mind and expect nothing less than inspiration, because up until a couple years a ago I knew I wouldn’t see the product in Canada for at least another 2-3 years.  With the popularity of the internet and e-shopping platforms, almost all of the smaller scale designers now have their product available online.  Over the next couple of days I will be sharing some of my favourite finds with you, and I will try my best to let you know who they are by or where they are from so you can get them for yourself.

The Odyssey Light by iQ environments…is more than just a light.

When I met Ismael Quintero and he told me his story I was virtually in tears.  The light which is 10 years in the making was originally fashioned for a Parson’s thesis project, where each student was encouraged to design something by bringing the outdoors indoors.  Quintero unexpectedly found a hydrant lid on Wall St. right after 9/11 and he used it to cast the light in porcelain.

Since it’s original porcelain form made 10 years ago, the Odyssey light has been transformed into a glass model made from 70% recycled glass, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the 9/11 Museum.
