It’s Crystal Clear

And it’s an all-natural solution to underarm odour.  The first time I tried it, I wet the crystal like the instructions said and rubbed it under my arms a couple times and went on with my day…a few hours later I wasn’t feeling that fresh.  So the rock did not withstand the test of time, forcing me to move onward in my quest to find the best all-natural deodorant.  It tried  everything the health food stores sell from creams to sticks, to sprays, and then home remedies, trying very hard not to slip back to the drug store brands full of aluminum chlorohydrate.   Nothing really withstood the test of time.

So I shared my plight with a girlfriend who also refuses the drugstore brands, and she told me she has been using the rock crystal for months and loves it. Her secret:  you have to rub it up and down 50 times, which I have never seen on any package or insert.  So I gave it a try, and I can’t deny that 50 strokes is the magic number, plus you get zero white-pit and no residue on clothing, minus not so good for camping when showers might be scarce.  It can’t handle a two or three day stretch with out a shower, like Secret or Nivea.

Hemp Hearts Make Me Happy

Sorry I have been an absentee blogger for the last couple of weeks, life and work have gotten in the way.  But here I am finally back online, and sharing with you my new favourite protein- hemp hearts!

I was at my local health food store looking for Hemp Pro 70 for my morning smoothies, which is water soluble.  But they only had the Hemp Pro 50, which I find a little gritty.  So the knowledgable clerk suggested I try hemp hearts, which have the same amount of protein as the powder, but are raw and have less of a dried green taste and more of a creamy taste.  Not to mention in a good blender they virtually disappear leaving zero grit behind.  So skip the soy, the whey, and now the hemp protein powder and get on the Hemp Hearts.

Raw Chocolate = Superfood

The other day I was prop shopping down in the Distillery District and was looking for a super fast lunch, for me that most always means liquid- like a protein shake or a smoothie, not boozy.   While I was waiting for the man at Livia to make my shake (blueberry, orange, banana, bee pollen, hemp protein),  he gave me a quick education on Cacao nibs, chocolate in its rawest form.

First thing he told me “they make your brain feel great”, due to the MAO inhibitors, which also suppress the appetite- bonus.   Then he said “they are super high in Magnesium too”  which most of us are deficient in, magnesium is essential in brain and bone health.  And they also contain a whole whack of PEA, the chemical released when we fall in love.  Cacao nibs anyone?  I’m all over it!

Sunscreen: to Wear or Not to Wear?

posted by Alanna Davey on 2011.06.24, under Beauty, Health

Like other creams we put on our face, the safety and efficacy of sunscreen is highly questionable.  The chemical blocks seep into our skin increasing our toxic burden and disrupting our hormones, not to mention most of the chemical blocks are also filled with ingredients on the “dirty dozen” list.  And the mineral blocks that use zinc and titanium nano-particals to physically block the sun claim to be safer, but might actually seep into our skin too.  So what the hell do you do to protect yourself from the sun safely?  Don’t forget we actually need the sun for vitamin D btw, so blocking it out entirely is not good either.  Check out these 9 truths before you read on.

The very best way to protect yourself from the harmful UV rays is to stay indoors or in full shade when the sun is the strongest between 10am and 4pm, and if you must be in the sun wear a huge hat, and long sleeved protective clothing made from linen, hemp, or another wicking fabric to keep you cool and dry.   But if you must wear a sunscreen because you have heard over and over again like myself, it can help reduce the signs of premature aging try something from Pure + Simple, they offer a range of different products that only use all natural ingredients, and an educated staff to help you make the right choice.  Personally I use their house brand on my face almost daily, and stay out of the sun as much as possible.
